Ride the World in 80 Days

Follow in the tyre tracks of Filius Fogg and Passepartout, recreating their route around the world from London to the South of Italy, across India, the USA and Ireland, all in 80 days.  Added bonus if we use the departing and arrival dates from the book ( but this would mean a different route through the USA due to bikes and snow not being best of friends). People could join for all or some of the legs.

Target for this trip is 2031. To start on the same day as Fogg (2nd Oct) would mean crossing the USA during December in the snow; so we take exactly 6 months off and leave on 2nd April 2031.

Leg 1: London to Brindisi, Italy

basic plan

  • Have a leaving party at a pub near The Reform Club in Central London

  • Take 14 days to travel 2,000 miles

  • Basic route: London - Paris - Turin - Florence - Monte Cassino - Matera - Brindisi

  • After storing/transporting the bikes, fly to Mumbai, India

costs

  • tba

considerations

  • After getting to Brindisi, may need to backtrack to a location that can transport the bikes back to London.  Or will need to store the bikes for a few months and pick them up at a later date.

  • If we want to have a leaving party in London, adjust the itenary so we leave on a Sunday

Leg 2: Mumbai to Kolkuta

basic plan

  • Buy bikes in Mumbai and sell them in Kokuta

  • Take 30 days to travel 1,500 miles

  • Basic route: Mumbai - Nashik - Prayagraj - Varanasi - Patna - Bardhaman - Kolkata

  • Visit tea plantations, tiger reserves and wildlife parks along the route

  • After selling the bikes, fly to San Francisco

considerations

  • Lisa is keen to join David on this leg.

  • Will want to go to Ames, one hour north of Des Moines where Lisa and David use to live

Leg 4: Cobh, Ireland to London

basic plan

  • This could go one of three ways depending on where the bikes end up after leg 1.

  1. If bikes were stored in Italy, then could pick them up and ride to Ireland before heading to London; this will take a few more days

  2. If bikes from Italy could be transferred to Ireland (via London), use these to ride back to London

  3. If bikes aren't available, buy some bangers to get back to London

  • Take seven days to travel 1,700 miles

  • Basic route: Cobh - Dublin - Liverpool - London

  • Finish with a homecoming party near the Reform club in London

costs

  • tba

considerations

  • Could the bikes be transported from London to Ireland prior to arrival? Or we buy bangers to get us to London.
